Introduction

Polyethylene (PE) and Polyvinylidene Chloride (PVDC) are widely used materials, particularly in the packaging industry. Understanding their differences in characteristics and applications can guide material selection based on specific needs.

Difference between PE and PVDC

Chemical Structure

Polyethylene is a polymer of ethylene, consisting of long chains of CH2 groups. In contrast, PVDC is a polymer of vinylidene chloride, with a repeating unit of CH2CCl2. This difference in structure gives rise to significant differences in their properties.

Barrier Properties

PVDC is known for its excellent barrier properties against oxygen, water vapor, and aromas, with an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) as low as 0.6 cm³/m²·day. PE, especially in its high-density form (HDPE), also provides good barrier properties but not to the extent of PVDC, with OTR values typically around 1400 cm³/m²·day.

Mechanical Properties

PE offers superior flexibility and durability with an elongation at break of over 500% for some types. PVDC, while less flexible, provides enhanced strength with a tensile modulus approximately 30% higher than that of PE. This makes PVDC more appropriate for rigid packaging needs.

Environmental Impact

PE is considered more environmentally favorable due to its recyclability and lower chlorine content. PVDC poses challenges in recycling due to the release of hydrochloric acid during processing, requiring specialized facilities.

Anersin Company Solutions

Anersin offers a range of solutions tailored to leverage the strengths of both PE and PVDC. These include multilayer films combining PE's durability with PVDC's barrier properties, and custom recycling programs to mitigate environmental impact.
