Introduction
Polystyrene injection molding is a widely used manufacturing process for producing large volumes of plastic parts. This process involves injecting molten polystyrene into a mold cavity where it cools and solidifies into the final product.
Polystyrene Injection Molding Process
The process can be broken down into several key stages which include clamping, injection, cooling, and ejection.
1. Clamping
The process begins by closing the two halves of the mold using a clamping unit. The hydraulic power applies pressure to ensure the mold remains closed during the injection process.
2. Injection
Molten polystyrene, heated to around 200°C, is forced into the mold cavity. The injection pressure ranges between 70 and 140 MPa.
3. Cooling
Once the mold cavity is filled, the material is allowed to cool. The cooling time is calculated based on the maximum wall thickness and generally ranges from 10 to 30 seconds.
4. Ejection
After cooling, the mold opens, and the finished part is ejected. The ejection force is carefully controlled to prevent part deformation.
Specific Parameters and Numerical Analysis
- Mold Temperature: 40-80°C
- Injection Pressure: 70-140 MPa
- Injection Speed: 300-600 mm/s
- Cycle Time: 20-60 seconds
- Cooling Time Calculation: Cooling time (seconds) ≈ (maximum wall thickness in mm)^2 / 2
